Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre

The Steamtown Heritage Rail Centre has been established to preserve the narrow gauge heritage of northern South Australia.

The unique collection of rolling stock includes several steam and diesel locomotives as well as many historic carriages dating from 1881. An interesting collection of freight and service vehicles complete the collection.

Numerous artifacts are on display in the Rail Heritage Museum located on the Steamtown site. In this display are many items and photographs that demonstrate life in the railways in Peterborough since its origins in 1881.

A fascinating display of photographs depicts the impact of migrant workers on the development of the railways, especially during the 1950s’.

A significant redevelopment is occurring at Steamtown during 2009. A new entrance, interactive displays, improved interpretation and new car parking facilities will all add to the experience to be enjoyed at Steamtown.

Steamtown is located at the western end of Peterborough’s main street (Telford Avenue).

Steamtown is open every day except for Good Friday and Christmas Day.

Guided tours commence at 9.00 a.m. and the last tour starts at 3.00 p.m.

Prices for tours are Adults $10.00, Seniors Concession $7.00, Children under 15 $5.00. Group concessions are available.
